Gastrointestinal Analysis GI Ecologix

In the last few decades, DNA analysis has transformed the field of microbiology.

GI EcologiX™ has been designed as a comprehensive GI health and microbiome profile that serves the clinician and their patients whilst aligning the methodology, technology and biomarkers with the latest developments in the microbiology space.

The GI EcologiX™ profile uses quantitative realtime polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), using TaqMan technology, to analyse the bacterial, fungal and viral communities of the gastrointestinal ecosystem. It also measures gastrointestinal health markers by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) technology.

Phylo have also added a couple of quality measures to ensure accuracy, which differ from other microbiome tests on the market. Phylo utilises a fixed amount of sample DNA (ng) per test and uses an endogenous control to measure your ‘baseline’ microbial load. This enables to report accurately on the relative abundance of the target microbes.

What you need to know about the test’s technology and markers:

  • Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR)
  • Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
  • Endogenous control for normalisation and accuracy
  • 5 x GI health markers (beta-defensin 2, calprotectin, elastase, SIgA, zonulin)
  • 63 x target bacterial, fungal and parasite markers
  • SCFA producing bacteria (butyrate, propionate and acetate)
  • SIBO related bacteria (sulfidogenic and methanogenic bacteria)
  • H. pylori + stool antigen
  • The EcologiX™ profiles have a two-step quality and control process that underlies the methodology: standardisation of the samples to a particular concentration of extracted DNA, and the use of an endogenous control to normalise the data.
  • The test is based on extracting a set amount of total DNA from the sample to analyse, as opposed to using a particular weight of the sample (e.g. stool). This means that the final result of microbial abundance will be obtained based on DNA concentration and not the weight of the sample. This removes many variables, limiting the risk of two samples from the same individual giving rise to different results, and allowing better comparisons between samples.
